Welcome, First-Time Tanner!

Congratulations on taking the first step into the ancient art of hide tanning! This checklist will guide you through every stage of the process, from preparation to your finished, beautiful brain-tanned leather. We've broken everything down into manageable steps so you never feel overwhelmed.

Pro tip: Print this checklist and check off items as you go. There's something satisfying about physically marking your progress, and it helps ensure you don't miss any critical steps. You've got this!

Phase 1: Preparation (Before You Start)

Proper preparation is half the battle. Take time to gather everything you need and set up your workspace before touching the hide.

Choose your first hide
Start with deer - it's the most forgiving for beginners
Gather all tools
Fleshing beam, scraper, knife, buckets, cable/stake
Set up workspace
Outdoor or well-ventilated area with good lighting
Read instructions completely
Review entire process before starting
Plan your time
Block out 2-3 full days for the complete process

Phase 2: Fleshing & Membrane Removal

This is the most critical phase. Proper membrane removal determines the success of your entire tanning project.

Remove all meat and fat
Use fleshing beam and scraper - be thorough
Remove membrane completely
This is critical! No membrane should remain
Check for thin spots
Be extra careful around edges and belly
Rinse hide thoroughly
Remove all debris and loose material
Inspect entire hide
Look for any missed spots before proceeding

Critical: If membrane remains on the hide, the brain solution cannot penetrate properly. Take your time here - it's worth it!

Phase 3: Brain Tanning Application

Now the magic begins! The brain solution will transform your rawhide into soft, workable leather.

Prepare brain solution
1 brain per hide, mixed with warm water
Check consistency
Should be like a milkshake - smooth and pourable
Soak hide completely
Minimum 15-30 minutes, massage solution in
Wring out excess
Remove liquid but keep hide saturated
Keep moist and warm
Use plastic bag trick if needed
Apply second round if needed
Thick areas may need extra application

Phase 4: Breaking & Softening (Most Important!)

This is where your hide becomes soft leather. Once you start, you cannot stop until it's completely dry!

Wait until 80% dry
Hide should be tacky but not wet
Clear your schedule
2-4 hours of continuous work required
Start stretching and pulling
Work entire hide in all directions
Watch for white break
Fibers turning white = success!
DO NOT STOP
Work continuously until completely dry
Work extra hour after "done"
When you think it's done, keep going!

WARNING: Do Not Start Unless You Have 3-5 Hours Available!

If you stop working the hide before it's completely dry, it will become stiff and hard. Plan accordingly!

Phase 5: Smoking the Hide

Smoking preserves your hide and gives it that beautiful golden color. It also makes the leather water-resistant.

Ensure hide is completely dry
Must be 100% dry before smoking
Set up smoke tent/tipi
Create enclosed space for smoking
Use proper wood
Rotten wood (punk wood) works best
Maintain cool smoke
Smoke should be cool, not hot
Smoke both sides
Flip hide to smoke flesh side and fur side
Check color
Nice golden-brown color indicates proper smoking

Phase 6: Final Washing & Breaking

Almost done! This final phase ensures your hide is clean, soft, and ready to use for years to come.

Wash with Dawn soap
Warm water + Dawn dish soap on both sides
Rinse thoroughly
Remove all soap residue
Final breaking at 60% dry
Work hide again as it dries
Work until completely dry
Same continuous effort as first breaking
Inspect finished hide
Check for any stiff spots
Celebrate your success!
You've created beautiful brain-tanned leather!
