Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Prepare Your Tru-Tan Mixture

Your Tru-Tan container has enough product to complete an entire cow hide. Measure out the amount you need and mix it with warm water (hot enough that you can still comfortably put your finger in it). Blend the mixture thoroughly until you achieve a consistency similar to a milkshake, but slightly more on the runny side. This ensures even application and proper penetration.

2

Ensure Proper Hide Preparation

Before applying Tru-Tan, your hide must be properly prepped. It's critical that the hide has been thoroughly cleaned to remove any evidence of membrane. A well-prepared hide is essential for achieving optimal tanning results and ensuring the Tru-Tan solution penetrates evenly throughout the hide.

3

Apply the Tru-Tan Solution

Lay your hide on a flat, level surface. You can either use a paint brush to apply the mixture or pour it directly onto the hide and work it in with your hands. Make sure to cover the entire hide surface evenly, working the solution into all areas. Don't be shy—thorough application is key to a successful tan.

4

Monitor the Hydration Process

Keep a close eye on your hide as it hydrates. You may need to add more warm mixture to ensure complete hydration. The hide should become fully pliable before moving to the next step. Pro tip: Place the hide in a garbage bag in a warm room to help speed up the hydration process. Patience here pays off with better results!

5

Begin Working the Hide

Now that your hide is completely hydrated, it's time to start working it. Do a full once-over, twisting and pulling the hide to begin breaking the fibers. You can use the cable method or any technique you've used successfully in the past to break hides. This initial working is crucial for developing that soft, supple texture.

6

The Critical Drying Phase

When the hide reaches about 80-90% dry, you'll notice the break turning the hide white and holding. This is the most important phase! Do not stop moving the hide until it has fully dried. The more work you put in at this point, the softer your finished product will be.

Important: When you think the hide is dry, we assure you it's not! Work it for an extra hour after you believe it's completely dry. This extra effort makes all the difference.

7

Storage Before Smoking

Now that your hide is fully dry and you're happy with the break, you can either move directly to the smoking process or store it in this condition until you have more hides to smoke together later.

Storage Note: Keep stored hides away from animals—they consider hides in this state a tasty treat for some reason!

8

Final Wash After Smoking

After your hide has been smoked using your preferred method, conduct a final wash. We recommend using warm water and blue Dawn dish soap for this step. Wash both the fur side and the hide side thoroughly to remove any residue and bring out the natural beauty of your tanned hide.

9

Final Breaking & Completion

Once washed and at about 60% dry, start working that hide again just as you did during the initial breaking phase. Follow the same steps from Step 6—twist, pull, and work the hide continuously as it dries. Remember: keep going even when you think it's dry!

Congratulations!

Once complete, you'll have a beautifully tanned hide that can be used in wet applications and will last for years. You've created something truly special using traditional, all-natural methods!

Pro Tips for Success

  • Don't rush the hydration process—fully pliable hides are easier to work and produce better results
  • The 80-90% dry phase is where the magic happens—this is when you create that soft, white break
  • Work in a warm environment when possible—it helps with both hydration and drying
  • Your arms will get tired, but the extra effort in the final drying stages makes all the difference
